WEIGHT
Diamonds and other gemstones are weighed in metric carats; one carat is equal to 0.2 grams,
thus a 5carat diamond being equal to one gram.
A carat is divided into 100 points and used as a reference for weight:
A 60-point diamond weighs 0.60 carats.
When rough diamonds are cut and polished into the finished diamonds that you see, as much as 60% of
the total carat weight can be lost. The value and price of diamonds rises exponentially with each increase in
carat weight, due to the increased rarity as diamond sizes increase.
The heavier diamonds are, the more they cost per carat.
Due to the considerable cost attached to small movements in carat weight,
precision is crucial. Weight of diamonds is often measure to the hundredth thousandths
of a carat and rounded to a hundredth of a carat. Diamond weights greater than one carat are expressed
in carats and decimals; For instance a 1.23ct diamonds would be described as
‘one point two-three carats'.
